Sir,

15984

With reference to previous correspondence terminating

with Mr. Lucas' letter of 28th July last, I am directed

by the Secretary of State for India in Council to inform

you that it has been found desirable to continue the

services of Dr. Lowson till 18th September to enable him to

write jointly with Surgeon Major Reade a report upon the

Epidemic of Plague in Western India. It will be seen from

the accompanying letter to the first mentioned Officer

that he will receive during the period of such employment

a consolidated allowance of £174.19.8 being two thirds of

the amount drawn by him while on active service in India.

I am to add that as the sum in question will devolve

upon the Indian Exchequer it has been assumed that Mr.

Secretary Chamberlain will acquiesce in the arrangement

which has been communicated to Dr. Lowson, and which is in

supersession of the proposals contained in the Colonial

Office letter under acknowledgment.

The Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office.

1081. 5 rms.-1/97. I. 157.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

A Graly
